Trick or Treat!

It’s hard to believe that another Halloween is nearly upon us.

There’s something about seeing my kids in their costumes, pretending to be someone else, that makes them seem so much bigger than they are.

Now, looking back on old Halloween photos, I realize how truly small they were.

This photo was taken when my son was 4 and my daughter was 2. He was obsessed with Ben 10 and she was obsessed with Playhouse Disney. My daughter couldn’t have been more delighted to put on her Minnie Mouse costume and, shortly after this photo was taken, my son let me paint his face to look like one of the Ben 10 aliens.

They were both little babies! Their respective obsessions have long since been discarded in favor of cooler, trendier, “bigger kid” things. While I thought I’d be so glad when the preschool cartoon days were over, I am a little sad to think that what once was a daily staple is now just a distant memory.

This year my daughter will dress as a cheetah, and my son, a ninja. Their costumes may lack the cuteness factor, but their enthusiasm and excitement for the Day of Spook hasn’t waned a bit in these last four years. And for that, I’m truly grateful. I’m not ready for childish delight to be a distant memory just yet.
